For the high volume reloader, case preparation can be a daunting task. Preparing cases for loading involves several steps: case trimming, case-mouth chamfering, primer pocket cleaning and primer crimp removal just to name a few of the more basic ones.
Performing these operations on perhaps hundreds if not thousands of cases will become tiresome very quickly. Case trimming and chamfering is one of the slowest steps involved in case preparation. There are many case trimmer tools on the market, from simple hand tools to high-end power tools. Today we will take a look at the RCBS Trim Pro Power case trimmer. Our goal with any product review is to determine whether a product will actually save us time, therefore justifying the cost over basic hand tools.
The RCBS Power Trimmer, comes with # 2,3,4 and 10 shell holders and 9 case pilots (for calibers: 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 35, 44 and 45). The shellholders hold the shell casing firmly in the unit during the trimming process. Consult you documentation that comes with the unit for the proper shellholder needed for your particular case. Today we will be demonstrating the case trimmer using the #10 shell holder for .223/5.56 cases.
The RCBS Trimmer is a heavy duty unit, with a very powerful electric 110V motor. It rotates the cutting head at approximately 100 RPM's. The Trimmer is activated using a leaver and a micro switch that controls the on/off operation of the motor. Watch the video below for a demonstration of how the RCBS Trim Pro Case Trimmer operates. The RCBS Power Trim Pro is a solidly built unit that will last a life time with proper care. The construction is solid, and is built with precision in mind. The trimmer can accurately trim a case time after time to within a .001 of an inch. Be sure to put a light amount of oil on the rotating shaft as this will keep the trimmer's rotating parts from binding and provide proper lubrication for consistent and accurate operation. In the demo video, you saw the 3-way cutter. This cutter does NOT come with the unit, but it is recommended that you get the 3-way cutter to help cut your trimming operation time even more! The 3-way cutter is fully adjustable for the amount of chamfer. Taking the time to set it properly, will result in cases that have a very professional finish. From the factory, we found the 3-way cutter to have too much chamfer, so one should take the time to set up the cutter using a few test cases.
In summary, this is a great unit! For the high volume reloader or for just processing larges amounts of brass, this unit will cut your trimming time in half! We highly recommend it!
