i would go with the 308 if i was buying it to hunt deer. you might find a varmit model to be a little heavy. usually when the large chain stores put something on sale you cant find it cheaper at a gun shop any ways

you can check the ProMag Archangel Remington 700 Short Action Rifle for hunting. That was good as my thinking. You can google about it. There you can find lot of information. Or you can check deer hunting articles on google or check this article where to shoot a deer with a bow

With all the modern powders and the same projectiles available, you can get almost as much energy out of a .308 as you can a .30-06 and depending on the load, with less recoil as pointed out. You also have a short action and a lot of match ammo that is factory available.

Over the years, bench rest shooters have proven the shorter, fatter cases give better powder ignition then long ones and partially filled cases can be worse when the ammo is not handled identically, I.E. upright before loading to get all the powder at the bottom near the primer etc.

Though in military matches, the .30-06 was used for years, you will not find .30-06s competing in 1000 yard Palma or F Class, nor Benchrest, but will find lots of .308s. Also as a military round, the .308 can be used in the Military F Class.

I’ve owned both 30-06 and 308. Cheaper to shoot 308 but as an old timer, I prefer 30-06. Either will get the job done.
I currently own a 700 chambered in 30-06. Magpul Hunter, ZEISS, Timney Trigger.
