    Remington 700 .308 to .243 conversion

I have a Remington 700 SPS chambered in 308 Win. I am currently building an AR-10 in 308 simply because I miss shooting my old service rifle (M110) from the military. I don't see any reason in having two rifles chambered in 308, so I was thinking about selling the bolt gun or trading it for something chambered between my current AR-15 in 5.56 and my current AR-10 build in 7.62. After reading a little bit I realized that the 243 Win has the same parent case as the 308 Win. Can I just re-chamber my Remington 700 to 243 by simply just re-barreling it? Keeping the action and bolt the same?

The 243 Win does use the same bolt face as the 308, so re-barreling with a quality barrel might be a good option all around, especially if you like the rifle as is.

Welcome to the Forum. Where are you located?

As D64 said you can rebarrel and rechamber with anything that has a bolt face of .473 as is the case for the .308, so yes a .243, especially an Ackley Improved, .243AI might be nice depending on what you want to do with it. A good Custom Barrel, Kreiger etc., will run you about $320.00 for the barrel blank and expect to pay around $250.00 for it to be chambered, crowned and installed. You could also do, 6mmBR Norma or a .25 caliber on a .308 case etc. Then there is the 6.5x47 Lapua. the 6x47 Lapua, 6 or 6.5 CM and others. Lots of options depending on what kind of shooting you want to do and if you hand load or not.

If you are going to use a magazine (most of my precision rifles are single shot) then you have to be more careful about cartridge selection and the .243 is certainly an excellent choice.

As a guy with a 700 ADL synthetic in 243..... I love it. Just like anything else, you have to place your shots, but the 243 is a killer for sure when it comes to a hunting rifle. Accurate, light, and easy shooting. Good factory ammo is available, and reloading opens up some options too.

You could also go with the 7mm-08, 260 Remington, 284 winchester, 6.5-284, 250 savage......

Pretty sure the creedmoors use that same bolt face too, if you're into that.

You could also Set back the existing barrel and rechamber in another 6mm variant. 6 BR, 6 BR ACK IMPO, 6 Dasher etc.

.243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, .338 Federal, .358 Winchester. All based on the same cartridge case all with factory loads available. .338 Federal is probably hardest to find, but it you build one, it will take anything on this continent except the big bears. .284 Winchester and 6.5-284 are based on the same case, but blown out with a rebated rim, for more capacity. All are capable rounds, depending on what you want to do with them.

you cannot rechamber from 308 to 243 impossible but you can rebarrel is easily with a Criterion with a nut no need for gunsmith but you would need 243 headspace chamber gauge to set headspace of course, good luck
