Question I got a Remington 1903A3 sporter from grandpa......

    ....i got bunch of questions.

    1. what is needed to rebarrel it myself? I'm getting 10moa at 100 yards.
    2. place to buy 1903 barrels? looking for 30.06.
    3. it is tabbed and drilled for weaver 2 piece scope bases, is there a 1 piece out there with 20moa?
    4. 30.06 the only option i have with a 1903? just say one of those 35.06 rounds, looks pretty cool.

    I'll have a pic soon.

    thanks,

The 35,06 ? That sounds like the 35 Whelen that was developed in the 1920s by James Howe of Griffin & Howe and Col Townsend Whelen. It was a Wildcat cartridge until Remington standardized it in 1987 and made the model 700 in 35 Whelen. I love my 35 Whelen.

Welcome to the Forum from New York. I assume this is an 03-A3 Springfield , just manufactured by Remington during the Second World War?

I think Criterion is probably the best source for the barrel. Doing it yourself is a different problem. As for cartridge, you could probably use any of the -06 derivatives.

My guess is you won’t be able to find a one piece scope base as there was no standard for the base placement. You can get the 20moa with the weaver bases by shimming the rear base. Aluminum drink cans make great shim material!

    By the way, great read:

I would think you could find a 20 MOA Rail that is the right size. You just may have to have new mounting holes drilled. I am not a fan of shimming one base to get additional MOA, you end up with neither ring being exactly aligned. Not a real problem but unless you then using a lapping tool and lap both rings mounted, at the same time, you end up with more scope ring marks.

Thanks for adding that clarification. It's really an important step with any two base installation but definitely when shimming.

The 1903A4 Remington Sniper models used 1 pc. Redfield mount, unless the base where the rear peep sight is grinded off depending on holes on front base is the best base for mounting on 1903A3 action. Most Remington WWII 1903A3's were 2 groove, sot as well as Smith Corona 4 & 6 groove barrels. I've shot a few Remington 1903A3's, puzzled why you want/need to rebarrel the rifle aready?

Would like to see the action, is the Remington marking on right side or left side of action? Some "smiths" used A4's for sporters.
