I have been lurking for about four weeks and finally decide to join up. I'm the proud owner of a Model 700 BDL Left Handed bolt action chambered in 30-06 with a Leupold 1-4x scope. I bought the rifle new back in 1980 as a deer rifle, it served me well but ended up in the closet for the last 10 years. I had a chance to get out to a range last month and got the old fever back. I forgot just how much fun 100 yard target shooting and reloading is. I've some questions I'll be posting down the road along with some range reports.

Welcome and am also quite new to the forum. I just brought home a 700SPS in .308 this past monday and am now in the market for a decent scope and then it will be time for some target practice.

Welcome to you both. Rudy N, how far are you looking to shoot. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40. It is fairly inexpensive ($170-) and it works well for me out to 100 yards. Nikon scopes have a great reputation for being rugged, water/fog proof (one piece rubber seal runs the whole length of the scope. And obviously, their optics quality is excellent. My next purchase will be a proper 1000 yard scope. I am leaning toward the Nightforce 12-42x56 http://nightforceoptics.com/12-42-x-56-nxs/. I've heard that you should spend twice as much on optics as your rifle cost. So I'm looking at $2k in glass anyways. But I am very happy with my Nikon for now. It's a good step up from the really cheap stuff without breaking the bank.

Thanks for the welcome, I would love to try 200yds or more but the local range only goes to 100yds. My best reload for the 30-06 so far has been 57 grains of IMR 4350 powder with a 150 grain boat tail speer tip. I was comparing the same load with H 4350 and couldn't see much difference between the two. I got a 3/4 inch pattern at 100yds with three shots with both powders. I'm using mixed brass and an old strap on bipod made by Bausch & Lomb. It's not bad for a stock 700BDL just out of storage.

That IS good for a rifle just getting woke up. Can't go wrong with a 700. I don't reload. Someday maybe, but it don't have the time. And when I get into stuff, I get WAY into it. Too much on my plate. 15-day-old daughter, toddler, etc, etc. I shoot Federal Gold Medal Match 175gr Match King . I like it and I found a good deal on a big case. I know that there are better custom loads out there, but FGMM is very consistent for me.

eddie, welcome to the forum. hope you stay active here.
if it were me id choose loading the h-4350 over the imr because the hogdon 4350 is a new line of powder that is NOT sensitive to temperature changes like some other powder.
if you shoot a good group in july and the same load goes crazy in dec. it wont happen with the h-4350.
    keep us updated.

I bet that would be stable in a semi auto as well. I shoot better groups with my saige when i load one at a time.
