700 suggestions

4542 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  BK
Bought a Remington 700 sps tactical yesterday.. Ordered a harris bipod 6-9 and a Leupold VX 111 3.5-10x40 scope. Then I realized I didn't know what to mount the scope on! Any suggestions? and is that a good scope for my new rifle? First long range rifle, not trying to set any records; thanks for any advice.

Hi Timmay! Welcome to the forums!

I'm sure you will enjoy your new SPS Tactical very much, I enjoy mine. That VX III will be a very good scope for you rifle. Good choice on the zoom range as well.

I went with a Leupold 20MOA 1 piece scope base. It's really solid and adds a bit of weight to it. The 20 MOA will help you reach out to longer ranges once you decide you want to test your shooting skills. I haven't shot mine past a 150 yards yet though!

Thanks for the fast response Semper Fi. Are you referring to the picattiny style rail like MidwayUSA sells? If so what rings did you get with that? Can't wait to hit the range:eek:) Thanks
I have these rings in "high": http://www.opticsplanet.net/picture-1-leupold-mark-4-rings-1-super-hight-medium-matte-black.html

And then, I have the 1 piece base shown here: http://www.opticsplanet.net/picture-1-leupold-mark-4-1pc-1-piece-2pc-2-piece-tactical-bases.html

I bought mine from midwayusa... there server is down for some reason, so I didn't grab the links from there.

However, my base is a 20MOA base. I'm not sure what that one is at the link above.

I went with the "Mark 4" stuff because my scope is a Mark 4... but pretty much any base/rings will work. Be sure you know your scope's tube diameter, whether it's 30mm or 1 inch. You will have to get rings that are the proper size for your scope tube diameter.

Hope that helps some!

Let me know if you need anything else.

As soon as you said that about the rings I realized I wasn't sure what the scope tube size was. Already ordered 1 inch rings, and I think that is right. Definately more money than I wanted to spend up top on the rail, and the rings, but I am a firm believer in buying quality once as opposed to spending less and hating the finished product. So when everything comes in I'll have a Sps Tactical with Leupold 3.5 10x40 scope, Mark 4 picatinny rail base and medium Mark 4 rings. Went with medium after reading some back post of yours and some others on what you all have on your rifles. You said at one point you might go to medium so I figured I'd give it a shot. Should be about ready for the range:eek:) Thanks
Yes, I think the 1" tube is the correct size. The medium rings will be a good height I think. With the 40mm objective, you should have plenty of clearance above the barrel.

You will have to post some pics once you get it all set up! Do you plan to reload you own ammo? What caliber did you get in the SPS Tactical?
.308. I'll post some pictures when it is good to go. I am not currently set up to reload; I think that will have to be after a deployment or next years tax return before I can afford to get set up doing that. Definately on my radar though. Incidently, how much aprox. does it cost to get set up reloading? Thanks again..
It doesn't cost as much as you might think. You will be able to reload your own ammo for about half the cost (or even less, depending upon how many times you can re-use the brass). I use the reloading equipment by Lee Precision. It's priced very reasonable, and I get good results with it. I have an older model of this press: http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/cat...l/catalog/turretpress.html#ClassicTurretPress

I've had mine for years, and is still working well! To get setup re-loading .308 would be around $250 buy the time you buy the dies and some basic tools.

With my SPS Tactical in .308, I'm up to 6 uses out of the brass so far, and it isn't showing any signs of metal fatigue. The more times you can re-use the brass, the more the "savings" stack up.

I have never shot factory ammo in my SPS Tactical, I started feeding it reloads from the beginning! :D

I also use the Lee Prefect Powder measure: http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1234714097.1770=/html/catalog/powhan2.html

It's proven to be accurate at dropping charges.

Well, that is not bad at all. I'll change my schedule to a couple of paychecks down the road:eek:) I am assuming it wouldn't be a bad idea to just go with one of there combo packages? thanks again

Leupold VX 111 3.5-10x40 scope.
Unless you ordered the Long Range model with the side focus, it's a 1" tube... the LR scopes are 30mm.

Oops, never mind. Looking at the Leupy website it seems as though the "smallest" LR scope is a 4.5-14x40.
Cool, I was about 95 percent certain it was, but couldn't get ahold of Cabelas to be positive. thanks
No problem. Helping others spend their money is always fun!
