Picked up a Leupold 1 piece standard base (with rings) off ebay for my 700 30-06, just came in earlier today. Of course it didn't come with any mounting screws :( You guys know any place I can pick some up? Right now i've just got the scope set up on there with the screws that came with a 2 pc. base I picked up at Academy (not going to hold well enough under recoil).

Also, why does the leupold base only use 3 of the 4 screw holes on top of the 700?

Any help is appreciated.

I wasn't aware that the 2 piece base only used 3 out of the 4 screw holes. Seems kinda strange to me also!
The 2 piece uses all 4, the 1 piece only uses 3. Strange, but as long as the scope doesn't move it's fine. Thanks for the links, that probably would've taken me a while to find on my own. Brownells does seem like a pretty good site, have to add it to the favorites.

I am using a Warne 20moa 1 piece base and it does use all 4 screws.

I've lost screws before while changing scopes/bases and I've always gone to my local gunsmith. He'd probably be willing to sell you what you need or maybe even give them to you. Last time he just gave me what I needed despite my offer to pay for them. His reply was to keep him in mind next time I get ready to have some work done.

I went to my local gunsmith for two slightly longer scope base screws. $8 for two screws. When I left I felt totally screwed

Brownells is probably the best source although don't be in too big a hurry right now. They seem to be a little backed up in the order department and even small orders for in stock items that can fit in a USPS envelope seem to take a few extra days.

I sure would like to find the genius that decided guns needed different thread pitches than everything else out there. As an example, can anyone tell me the benefit of a 1/4-30 thread over a 1/4-28.

contact leupold, I had a similar problem with weaver rings (set came with 10 instead of 12) and I emailed them, they guy I emailed sent out 2 screws that day, they arrived within 2 days in a plain envelope, no paperwork. Then like a week later I got an official package from weaver with 2 more screws and an invoice (still free though)

Just to add, NEVER throw any scope mount screws away. Extra's, ones taken off a rifle that's sold without scope, even those little screw plugs that come with a new rifle are saved in my house. I now have several "pill bottles" filled with them.

They just come in handy from time to time and you never know in advance when the time will be.
