I bought a base 700 ADL with black synthetic stock in 7mm Remington Mag in the late 90's, maybe early 2000's. It doesn't have a blued barrel but more of a rough coating on it. Can someone please tell me what this is? I'm considering having that coating removed and having the barrel cerakoted in an OD Green.

Thanks for the info.

I believe that the coating you describe is referred to as matte blue. At least that is the description they use for my SPS tactical.

You piqued my interest so I went back to the 1995-2003 catalogs to see just what was going on with the rifle finishes. I was out of the loop on firearms from the early 70's until 2008, It appears that Remington went to a matte blue or black (both colors are listed in that time frame) with rifles with synthetic stocks. They mention the synthetic stocks and metalwork as none reflective. In 2003 the wood stocked models listed "polished Blue" and the synthetics listed "matte Blue". From what I can determine the matte are shot peened prior to bluing to get the matte finish.
