I did a good bit of research before buying my sps-t and everything I read pretty much said 20" is pretty much optimal for the .308.
I'm thinking about starting back deer hunting so I'm wanting to buy another gun :D
I've never really been a fan of the 30-06 but I think my friends just about got me talked into it. Either that or the .270WSM. Either way, personally I like shorter barrels. I was thinking of maybe going with a 22" barrel, but was currious what's considered "optimal" barrel length for these calibers?

The rifle on the right has a 20" barrel and the one on the left has a 28" barrel. This year I'm going to set at my bench with that long barreled .243...

And when this guy shows up, I'm going to put one right between his eyes.

30-06, HARD TO BEAT, IF I HAD TO HAVE 1 CALIBER ONLY,IT'S THE ONE. 22 IN BARELL
WORKS WELL WITH IT. IT HASN'T SURVIVED FOR 104 YEARS FOR NOTHING,IT WILL JUST
ABOUT DO IT ALL,AT LEAST ON NORTH AMERICA, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MAYBE THE LARGEST
BEARS AND IT HAS KILLED MANY OF THEM,BUT WOULD NOT BE 1ST. CHOICE FOR THEM.

Hi Hotshot,
In thick bush a long barrel can be very "un-handy". You have to suit your gun to the hunting conditions. If you Really want to know your velocity, you could try a chrony. Be warned though, you can get addicted to "toys". For instance, the all-round gun probably does not exist and you could end up with more than one!

Ahh yes, this I'm well aware of. Hence the reason it would be just plain wrong to use my paper shooting gun to shoot deer with ;)
