Elk medicine

I have larger caliber rifles, but wanted to use the SPS in .308 this year for hunting. I got my chance last week when I was able to take this 5x6 bull elk here in Montana. I used a 165 gn. Barnes X bullet out of a LC Match case with 45 gn. of Varget with a CCI 200 primer. The animal was quartering toward me. I hit the front shoulder and recovered the bullet under the skin at the opposite hind quarter. Full length penetration with little weigth loss. Approximate range- 150 yards.
This photo was taken after the pack-out to the nearest road.
Next photo will be either a Muley or Whitetail buck.

Looks like the bullet certainly did it's job well. Congrats on your Elk.

Thanks. I also had some 180 gn. Sierra GameKings that I had loaded to use for elk, but thought, what the heck, at that range a 165 should do the job.

Nice elk!
Thanks!
Wow... good shooting. Dad is setup this year and we are using the Berger match bullet that they say are also good for hunting. They shoot nice groups in his .270 so he's ready to go!

Good luck to you and your dad. Most of the game I've taken has been with a .270
