Was the purchase a used one? if so, it was probally drilled and tapped for a reciever(peep)
sight. Not uncommon thing to do,especially if the previous owner might of been of older age.
alot of shooters prefered them,as that was what they were acustomed to and very effecient
with! I personally own a marlin 336 in 30-30 that is drilled and tapped and came with a peep
sight ,it was mounted with 2 screws. the previous owner, was in his 70's and said he had
learned to shoot peep in the military, and had most of his guns converted.
The two screws on the left side of the receiver are in fact for installing a peep sight. You would most likely have to do some woodwork in order to make it work. The holes were standard on all 700's until 1982 or 84, then Remington quit drilling them. I use that as a quick way to tell how old the rifle is, it gives you a starting point. Remington also changed the barrel markings and quit listing the patents but I don't remember what year that was.

That is good to know, I have owned 700's most of my adult life and I guess I never paid much
attention. I also work in a gun store but must admitt, we dont see many used ones in southern
Indiana. However new ones are starting to sell, since the tactical rifle craze.
