Took some readings from a few different ammo types, all fired from a 700SPS Tactical with 20" barrel

All are average of 5 shots so not enough for real deviation computation, but the data will give give you a pretty good idea of what this ammo is doing out of the shorter pipe.

Barrel has less that 100 rounds, temp was high 80's, alt 1000ft.

Here are my numbers from my 20 inch barrel SPS Tactical .308 shot in March 2011. I think the temperature was around 75 in Houston, TX (sea level). I replaced the factory stock with an aftermarket HS Precision stock and added a Timney trigger. I only used a 4X Leuphold hunting scope at 200 yards so my accuracy numbers probably could have been better if I had a higher powered scope.

Prvi Partisan 168 Match (they claim to use Sierra Matchking bullets)
Accuracy was 1.6 MOA
(factory claim 805 m/s or 2641 in a 24 inch barrel)

2554, 2573, 2569, 2539, 2546 Average=2556

Winchester Ballistic Tip 168
Accuracy was 1.8 MOA
(factory claim 2670 in a 24 inch barrel)

2571, 2557, 2546, 2584, 2564 Average=2564

Federal Gold Medal Match 168
Accuracy was 0.8 MOA
(factory claim 2650 in a 24 inch barrel)

2566, 2576, 2583, 2551, 2571 Average=2568

Federal Fusion
Accuracy was 1.7 MOA
(factory claim 2700 in a 24 inch barrel)

2612, 2622, 2651 Average=2628

Thanks for posting your numbers.

Good call on adding alt/temp, I added them to my original post.

I actually had the Prvi 168HP and 175FMJ on my list for the test, but got tired of my shooting limited by the chrono (and couldn't move it for another hour) so I just went on to shooting at the 250 yard line.

While the numbers overall do support the idea that the 20" barrel is not as much of a compromise as had been thought many years ago, I think the Hornady Superformance numbers show that longer ranges are well within reach of factory loads in the shorter barrel.

Your guys reading seem about right from a 20" barrel. They say its about 20 FPS per 1" which the specs from the ammo companies are usually readings from 24" barrels.

According to my ballistic computer program on my IPAD "Ballistic"

At a MV of 2568 FPS for Federal Gold Match 168 gn BTHP at 800 yards the MV is still supersonic 1238 FPS. I guess this means this rifle is still capable of very good accuracy a little beyond 800 yards.

MV at 900 yards is 1137 FPS.

BTW, I fired five new 5 shot groups at 100 yards yesterday with my same rifle setup. Two of the groups were barely above 0.5 MOA. That is simply amazing that a factory rifle with a simple aftermarket drop in stock rifle with less than 120 rounds in it, (Never "broken in") never cleaned yet beyond the initial wipe done of the barrel and chamber can shoot so well...especially with me behind the trigger.

I can't imagine how much more accurate custom guns with bedding, hand fitting, custom barrels, etc can be. I guess it sometimes pays to save the $$$ for more ammo and trigger time. When I have more time on my hands, I will definately need to pursue reloading this rifle. Now to try out some different factory loads...
