Ultrasonic vs Tumbler....

Hey guys,

I want to invest in a case cleaner and have heard good things about both, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with either or both who could help me with this decision. Give you an idea about my situation, I am only reloading .308 at the moment and only firing them out of one bolt gun. I am leaning towards the ultrasonic because of the great interior cleaning it shows.

Looking forward to hearing your comments.

I like the idea of the "greater interior cleaning", as you put it. It was one of the reasons for me buying mine. The tumbler took all day and the media(?) looked like there was not much life left in it. Ultrasonic has much smaller capacity but is much quicker. It is fiddly to place every case just-so, however. I'm sticking with mine.
That makes me feel much more confident on getting the ultrasonic cleaner, I am now just going to keep my eye out for a good deal on one maybe at Harbor Freight. Last question, what is your cleaning solution and process? I have heard 50/50 water vinegar works well for initial cycle and a final rinse with a little baking soda is good too. Later man!
It is so long since mine was used that I had to get on the phone and check up. To the water/white vinegar add a splash of Shower Power. This is their site www.ozkleen.com
It is for shower tiles.
When finished soak the cases in water/baking soda to stop them tarnishing. You have to agitate them, I am told. I used a garden hose on mine and they turned out OK.

I've looked into the ultrasonic cleaners in the past and think it makes good sense for also since I don't usually prepare more than about 25 rounds for a range session for my rifles.

For pistol cases I like to clean a bunch of once-fired brass using a tumbler.

Have you decided on a case cleaner yet?
SemperFi,

I started by picking up a tumbler, Midway had one on sale for $39. Then I got an email blast from HFT and they had an ultrasonic for 59.99! Now I have both in my garage, I have been ultrasonic first then polishing in the tumbler, may be over kill, but now they are clean and shiny! I will say I am very pleased with the interior cleaning of the ultrasonic, but process is quite tedious. Based on the 2L size of my cleaner, I am limited to the amount of brass I can clean at a once. I am going to keep playing around with my total process.

Which ultrasonic cleaning did you get?
