I have 2 year old Remington PSP Tactical (20" barrel) that I traded for new in the box. Can anyone tell me the twist rate for the barrel? This past weekend I fired several loads (all factory). Nothing below a 150 grains will hold ant type of group. The next groups I tried both cut one hole groups or they were all touching. These were Federal 168 grain Gold Metal Match and Hornady 168 grain A-Max.
I was hoping to use loading's 147 and 149 grained FMJ to pratice with, but they only hold about 4 inches at a hundred.
Oh well, got to break out the ole Rockchucker and start reloading. I simply can't afford to keep shooting factory match anymore.

Factory Ball ammo is just that ball ammo :)

Now match is good stuff especially the 168 FGMM ammo it's nuts what groups it can give off. The best pricing I have come upon was 23.50 shipped for the 168 FGMM. But even at that the price that you will get from reloading will be at least $.50 a round if not cheaper.

And WySPS yes the SPS Tac ACC-SD is a 1-10 while the original SPS Tac is 1-12.

Thanks for the information. I've been away from the computer for a couple of days, thus the late response. The barrel isn't marked concerning the twist rate. I've shot .308's for years and I've recently been bitten by the long range shooting bug. The Federal 168. Grain Gold Medal Match shoots great out to 600 yards and after that it becomes a little iffy. I think at around 700 yards or so, it becomes sub sonic and the accuracy falls off.
The lighter bullets just don't stabilize with the rifles twist rate. I've got to get started reloading. I'm thinking about going with IMR 4064 with a heaver bullet (maybe a 177 grain A-MAX) over a 40.0 grain charge of the 4064 and see what it likes.
I would like to find a cheaper bullet for practice, any ideas?

There's a saying among many LR shooters. "The only way you can get a 168 gr bullet out to 1K accurately is to put it in the back of your pickup truck and drive it out there." :) Unless you handload and build a real big fire below a 168 gr bullet it's tough to shoot it at LR accurately for he reason you stated, it goes transonic and starts to wobble.

An exception would be if you treat it like Palma shooters treat their bullets. 30 inch barrel, small primer pocket brass, and high energy powders loaded to charge weights way above anything published as max. Definitely not for a beginner.

For the A-Max you might want to start closer to 42 gr of IMR 4064 and work up. My accuracy load from a 24" bbl is 44.0 gr IMR 4064 with the bullet seated so it just touches the lands with a 175 SMK or TMK and back .020" when using the 178 A-Max. All use the same powder charge weight.
